Truth and Reconciliation
Some amazing miracles have occurred in the Truth and Reconciliation movement. The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was set up by the Government of National Unity to help deal with what happened under apartheid. The conflict during this period resulted in violence and human rights abuses from all sides. No section of society escaped these abuses. Rather than seeking revenge and retribution, the TRC focused on healing and putting the past in the past.
An example of Truth and Reconciliation in action is the story of Amy Biehl, a young white American woman who was killed by a group of blacks during the unrest of transition. Amy's parents took on the amazing task of understanding and forgiving their daughter's killers. They now operate a foundation in South Africa and have hired the killers to work in the community in a program aimed at eliminating youth violence.
