Lawyers
as Peacemakers
Peace-making may have been the original calling of lawyers. There are a number
of examples of lawyers being peacemakers. Gandhi was a lawyer. Some
lawyers in their law practices declare that they are peacemakers and work for
peaceful conflict resolution. They may be mediators, collaborative lawyers, or
just lawyers who work toward resolution. We know a lawyer who works in a team
with his wife, a therapist, to help couples resolve their issues and divorce
peacefully. We know lawyers who work for consensus in their communities and call
that peacemaking. Some lawyers go beyond the intellectual pursuits of law
practice and combine law and energy work to bring about healing and resolution.
(See Law and Energetic Healing for
example). One lawyer we know is the director of a non-profit working for
world peace. (See www.imtd.org, a peace
building organization. Sharif Abdullah also has a peace-building organization at
www.commonway.org ) Peace-making is the
natural companion commitment to many of the other vectors here. For example,
there is the Center for Restorative
Justice and Peace-making. Doug Noll, teaches peace-making at www.fresno.edu/depts/pacs
and practices law as a peace-maker at www.manageconflict.com.
