Lawyer Assistance Programs

       American Bar Association, Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs. Lawyer Assistance Programs now exist in all fifty states. Forty have paid staffs. Originally created to address attorney substance abuse issues, LAPs now support lawyers with many different issues, including stress management, depression and mental health issues, and career transitions.

       The Presidential Initiative Committee of the CoLAP is working with the ABA Standing Committee on Substance Abuse and the Office of the President to develop and implement means to educate all attorneys regarding substance abuse and how to deal with the issue in their clients, families, and colleagues. The educational programs will help lawyers address the whole client.
